Bedford B v Leighton Buzzard A – a reappraisal

In another great performance, the B team tied their match with the current county champions, Leighton Buzzard A.

Out-graded on every board and by 40 points on each of the top two boards, the team produced an excellent result, which should assist the Bedford A team in their quest for the title.

Nick had the better of the game against his 200 rated opponent, who offered a draw which Nick unsurprisingly accepted.

Alex, after a difficult opening, seemed to equalize but then went wrong and allowed a queen to fork 2 pieces.

Richard, having achieved yet another average position out of the opening as white, outplayed his opponent in a minor piece middle-game, won the exchange and swapped to a simple endgame when his opponent resigned. (game to follow)

Joe’s opponent tried a closed variation against the Sicilian but the position became blocked and despite Joe’s usual time shortage looming an early draw was agreed.

In the last game to finish, Gerry held his stronger opponent to a hard fought draw, successfully holding on in a bishop and pawns ending.
