Nick outmanoeuvred his opponent in the centre creating a number of weaknesses for him. Pushing for the win, Nick speculatively sacrificed a piece for a couple of pawns to open up the king. But his opponent had no problems snuffing out what attack there was, and that was that.
Alex built a good position and obtained a clear advantage. However in complications close to the time control and slightly short of time, his brain froze and he accepted a draw offer. Nick kindly pointed out a killer move winning a piece (Fritz sadly agrees too!)
Richard had an edge throughout, attacking the castled king. Reaching a rook ending a pawn up, exchanged to king and pawns and then with a unique positioning of kings and pawns, couldn’t see a way through, so agreed a draw. Looking at the game days later, a win was there, annoying. [See if you could have done better from the drawn position – Ed]
Chris’s opponent took advantage of King’s Indian inaccuracies to gain a small advantage but sacrificed a pawn to provoke what he saw as a winning combination – however it was an optical illusion and lost a piece. The rest of the game saw Chris in some time trouble trying to coax a pawn through to promotion. In the end, mate was achieved with 7 seconds remaining
After an early exchange of queens down the d file as in many of Joe’s games, a lot of manoeuvring took place. Joe’s was offered a draw but decided to press on and the game eventually entered a bishop and pawn ending with Joe’s pawns restricting the movement of his bishop and with his king in an inferior position. It was a difficult position to hold and Joe lost a pawn and the game.
All in all a frustrating result.
