Board 1 was far more exciting than the score card would suggest, with tactical quirks and double edged play throughout, the result was finally reached when Neil’s opponent sacrificed 2 pieces for the perpetual – see game
On board 2 John played solidly throughout against a strong opponent, inviting him into a weak position and taking advantage in the end-game, going one, then two pawns up. When the pieces came off the position was only going one way and his opponent resigned.
Board 3 was a victory snatched from the jaws of defeat. After playing the opening badly black was all over me, and I had about 3 minutes to make 10 moves when an ill-advised knight sacrifice let me back into the game and take the win. A reminder to never give up.
On board 4 our last minute substitute Peter Housden played a valiant game against George Ward, but lost a bit too much material in the middle game, and lost the ensuing end game.
On Board 5 Tony met his match against 12 year old Ajay, who played fantastically from the off for an convincing win. One to watch!
