The result of the inaugural Game of the Season tournament was announced at last night’s AGM.
The turnout was 50%, each vote comprising choice of 1st (3 points), 2nd (two points), 3rd (one point)
Of the 40 games on offer, 17 of them accrued points as follows (in reverse order):-
- 1 point – Taylor v Bodily (the championship decider!), Obi v Solloway, Nolan v Fitzgerald, Pike S v Nolan
- 2 points – Williamson v Habershon, Law v Arulnandy, Borrowdale v Ledger, Botteley v Hughes (whoever voted for this must have pressed the wrong button imvho!)
- 3 points – Ledger v Hegarty, Housden v Hickman, Hughes v Ledger, Pike S v Valentine
- 4 points – Hill v Botteley
- 5 points – Ledger v Kirk
- 6 points – Nolan v Hickman (part 2) – very fitting as Gerry and Neil contributed many games
- 7 points – Pike B v Williamson – everyone like seeing the county captain getting duffed up by someone with half his grade
- 14 points – Ross v Collacott – a well deserved, convincing winner
Nick demonstrated his winning game with only limited drunken heckling from the floor.
The meeting generally thought that the competition was a good idea that should be held annually and that the turnout would increase!
On a more general note, the website contributions this year have been excellent:-
- Neil has completed his masterly British Chess Masterpieces work
- the team captains and others have written lively, timely and interesting match and game reports
- many exciting and shocking (!) games have been shared
With this level of support, and the encouragement of others, the site more or less maintains itself – thanks to all – Ed.
