Eventually perseverance paid off and the D team won their final match, beating Milton Keynes C 3.5 – 1.5.
- My game against Alan Heath was short and violent, though a veil is best drawn over virtually everything except the final mating attack
- At about the same time Ben resigned prematurely, hallucinating that he was about to get mated, but his position was difficult and it probably didn’t alter the result.
- Much later in the evening, the smoke cleared in John’s game with Peter Rawcliffe with John two pawns to the good and controlling all the important squares – mate followed.
- Marc calmly squashed Colin Solloway, finishing with a neat tactic winning Q for R, and that was the match secured.
- Tony was better for some time against Dave Wells, got swindled out of an exchange, but made things as difficult as possible for his opponent thereafter and drew.
A tough season for the team but some good individual performances. Also, debutants Marc, Jeremy and Tony have all become established league players.
