Bedford progress at the British

Paul sends an update from Hull:

I haven’t been sending my games in the British O-65 Championship in Hull because for the first time every single game, from the Championship to the Under-8 Blitz, is recorded on a live board.

Where to follow the games. [An excellent resource I followed Steve Ledger’s first round game which was quite exciting: O 50 round 1 (lichess.org) – Ed]

You can even access previous rounds as well as watching live. Annotations and engine assessments are provided throughout, even if you try out your own moves (touch piece and select arrival square from the green dots). Thus I haven’t so far sent my games for the website.

However, here is some background to my Round 2 game, which is probably the greatest swindle I have ever perpetrated. My opponent David Tidmarsh is 88 this year, the oldest at the congress and someone whom I should normally beat. His grandson Callum Brewer is in the British Championship and I should have suspected that he helped his grandfather prepare a sharp line in the Alekhine for which there is evidence that I have struggled on the rare occasions it’s been tried. I quickly got into the most terrible mess:
