In an incredibly tight competition, Bedford finished half a point ahead of three other teams to take the title.
- On top board, Michael won a “standard” game in the morning, then lost a wild game against Graham Borrowdale in the afternoon.
- Alex scored the decisive(!) half point on board two. In some of his words “…. a tough day with two scrappy matches. In the morning with black
against MK he found himself in a reasonable position after the opening, but misjudged pawn capture left his position full of holes, and eventually accepted his opponent’s draw offer with relief. In the afternoon against Sudbury, short of time and facing the first decent position all weekend, he decided to be generous and blunder a rook away!” - Gerry won both his games, something of a demolition in the morning but an assured performance after lunch.
- Peter Housden won on time in the morning in a promising position.

Well done to all the team. Alex and I were sure we had thrown the overall victory away after blundering in our 2nd round games. Fortunately Gerry was able to balance things out with a really good performance.
