Conscious of the risk of possibly gaining promotion, the C team responded in style by ensuring they incurred a thrashing from MK C, thus putting to bed any suggestion of seeking glory. In three of the games, Peter G, Giuseppe and Tony all had fairly decent looking positions, which then gradually deteriorated into losses. My game was seriously dull until I thought I’d liven things up, but that resulted in the loss of a pawn and a poor position overall. Fortunately, there were enough resources in the remaining position to enable a draw. Nigel’s game was very tense and went to the last couple of minutes. Nigel was on the defensive for a lot of the game and ended a pawn down, but with enough in the position to salvage a draw just before the clocks wound down to zero.
The MK C captain said that they hadn’t won a game for a long time, so we achieved two positives from the match – avoiding the risk of promotion and making the other team happy.
