Ramsey raced to a comparatively quick (by his standards) win, overpowering his opponent’s Sicilian Dragon. Steve and Alex followed with straightforward wins against opponents who offered only limited resistance.

Richard continued his fine form on top board, but had much greater difficulty. He gave up a pawn in the opening for a more active position. Opinion of onlookers was divided as to who was better. In a complex ending with two bishops against two knights Richard was ultimately successful. Game published below.

My game went less well. I gained a knight for a pawn, but failed to capitalise on it. My opponent launched an attack andin an open position, both players had mating threats. I blundered, but he then missed a mate in one (which I also did not spot)! We eventually had a draw by repetition.

Overall, it was a successful season, with the team losing only to the three much stronger ‘A’ teams.
