The two Cox brothers made their first away appearances for the club, the Easter holiday having started so no school tomorrow. Ben finished early – he won a pawn in a good looking position and then his opponent miscounted attackers and defenders, lost a piece in a series of exchanges, and resigned.
Toby had won material when I first saw his game. It took until both players were down to a couple of minutes for him to checkmate. More details when I get a chance to look through the game. Later: no more details, but see this game.
The rest of us fared less well. I made it into a R+4P vs R+4P endgame, sadly one that was completely lost. Qais achieved a fine position whilst using over an hour less time than Eva (!), but then it went wrong. This one is due for publication, so come back in a day or two for the gory details. Jeremy dropped a pawn, then built up a decent attack, but his opponent stopped it by forcing the queens off and that was that.
So well done to Ben and Toby. It’s a shame we couldn’t manage the third win to achieve a famous victory.
